How long can the process take?
The FDA-approved mifepristone process includes follow-up with a health care provider about 7 to 14 days later. Bleeding or spotting may continue for days and sometimes longer. Prolonged or heavy bleeding does not by itself prove that the abortion is complete.
Only the prescribing provider can explain the expected schedule and follow-up for a specific patient. Do not use a general web page as instructions for taking medication.
What should be reviewed first?
Ask a licensed provider how pregnancy length and location will be evaluated, whether your health history or medicines change the risks, which symptoms are expected, how to contact the provider, and what follow-up will confirm the outcome.
Mifepristone is approved for an intrauterine pregnancy through 10 weeks. It is not a treatment for an ectopic pregnancy. Florida law currently imposes additional timing and in-person requirements, with limited statutory exceptions. Laws can change, so check the current statute and ask a qualified professional how it applies.
When urgent care may be needed
Heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, shoulder pain, fainting, fever, trouble breathing, or symptoms that feel dangerous need prompt medical attention. Follow the instructions from your licensed provider and call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.
