Pregnancy timing

Can you get pregnant on your period?

Yes, pregnancy is possible after sex during a period. It may be less likely on some cycle days, but bleeding does not guarantee that you are outside the fertile window.

Why pregnancy can happen during or soon after bleeding

Ovulation does not happen on the same cycle day for everyone or in every cycle. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for about three days and sometimes as long as five days. Sex near the end of bleeding can therefore overlap with an earlier-than-expected ovulation.

Not every episode of vaginal bleeding is a menstrual period. Spotting or irregular bleeding can make cycle timing harder to estimate.

When a pregnancy test can help

A home pregnancy test detects a pregnancy hormone after implantation. Testing too early can produce a negative result even when pregnancy is present. Follow the test directions, and repeat the test or contact a health professional if your period does not arrive or symptoms continue.

Care Net offers pregnancy testing at no cost in Vero Beach. An appointment request is not confirmed until the team contacts you.

Emergency contraception is time-sensitive

If unprotected sex happened recently and you do not want to become pregnant, emergency contraception may still be time-sensitive. Plan B One-Step is labeled for use as soon as possible within 72 hours. Other emergency contraception options may be available within a different window through a licensed professional.
