Does Insurance Cover the Abortion Pill? 

Some Florida insurance companies cover abortion, while others do not[1]. Medicare[2] and Medicaid[1] do not cover abortion services, except in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment to the mother. 

How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost Without Insurance? 

The typical abortion pill cost in Florida is $580[3]. Prices vary based on the dosage you need, the provider you purchase it from, and the state they are located in.

Additional Abortion Pill Costs to Consider

If you take the abortion pill, you may need follow-up care. You could experience side effects that may require additional doctor visits or hospital stays, such as: 

• Allergic reaction. If you’re allergic to any ingredients in vaginal misoprostol, you could go into anaphylactic shock[4].

• Hemorrhaging/vaginal bleeding. It’s normal to bleed for a while after taking the abortion pill. However, if you soak through two full-size sanitary pads per hour, for two or more hours, you could be hemorrhaging[5].

• Incomplete abortion. Incomplete abortions occur when some pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus after misoprostol has been taken. Emergency surgery may be needed to remove the remaining tissue and prevent infection[6]. 

• Infection. If you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever greater than 100.4° for more than 24 hours after taking the second medication, an infection may have developed. You may need antibiotics or even surgery to treat your condition[7].

What Do I Need to Do Before Taking the Abortion Pill?

Receive an Ultrasound

You may be wondering why you’d want an ultrasound if you’re considering the abortion pill. The answer is that ultrasounds provide the insight needed to make an informed and empowered decision for an unexpected pregnancy! They determine two key things about your pregnancy: viability and gestational age.

• Pregnancy Viability. A viable pregnancy means that the pregnancy is progressing properly. The goal is to rule out a nonviable pregnancy, such as a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy—in either case, abortion isn’t needed.

• Gestational Age. Gestational age refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is important to know, as you can’t take the abortion pill beyond 10 weeks of pregnancy[8].
