She tells you she might be pregnant. You may be surprised, worried, or unsure what to say. Start by asking what she needs from you right now. You do not have to settle every question in the first conversation.

Find out what she knows

Has she taken a test, or is she wondering because her period is late? A pregnancy test checks for a hormone called hCG. A missed period or a feeling that something is different is not a test result. If a result is unclear, encourage her to speak with a health professional rather than trying to diagnose it yourself. ^[1]

Ask whether she wants help finding information or would rather talk first. If she wants a test, offer to help with the arrangements. Let her decide whether she wants company.

Say something you can follow through on

You could say, "I want to understand what you're thinking. What would help today?" That is a suggested opening, not a script you have to get right.

Be honest about your feelings without turning them into demands. If you need time to collect your thoughts, say so. Agree on when to talk again instead of disappearing or sending a stream of messages.

Offer one useful thing

Ask before making plans. Would she like a ride, help writing questions down, or someone to sit with her? She may want different help than you expected.

Give her room to speak privately with her care team. Do not send her medical details in your own appointment request or assume you can receive her results. You can seek support for your own concerns without taking over her care.
