Pregnant in college? Find out what support you can use before changing your plans.

Before changing your course load, ask your college about pregnancy-related support. Title IX prohibits pregnancy discrimination at covered schools receiving federal funds. Federal guidance also describes protections for medically necessary pregnancy-related absences and making up missed work. ^[1]

Find the person who handles the question

Look for the college's Title IX coordinator. An academic adviser can help you identify that contact if you are unsure where to begin. You can ask for a conversation about how pregnancy may affect your classes without announcing it to classmates.

Ask who needs which information and how to provide it. Do not assume that every adviser, instructor or support office has the same confidentiality rules.

Bring the next few conflicts, not a complete life plan

Make a short list of the things you already know: an appointment that overlaps a class, a lab you are worried about attending, or a deadline during recovery. Ask:

• Who handles pregnancy-related adjustments and absences?
• How do I arrange missed work or discuss a return after medical leave?
• What documentation, if any, is needed, and where does it go?
• Who can answer questions about labs, placements or program requirements?

You can ask the office to explain the applicable policy in writing. Title IX has scope and exceptions, including a religious exemption where requirements conflict with a religious organization's tenets. ^[1] If you are unsure how the rules apply or believe you have been treated unfairly, seek current guidance from the Office for Civil Rights or a qualified legal adviser.

Check the practical consequences separately

Before dropping a class or taking leave, ask the financial-aid and housing offices what that choice would change. Ask about current parenting, childcare, food or counseling resources if you need them. A question does not assume a particular service, grant or childcare opening exists.

Write down the agreed next action and whom to contact if a plan does not work. You do not have to decide every semester at once.
