Pregnant without health insurance in Florida? Where to start.

You can look for prenatal care and ask about coverage at the same time. In Florida, pregnancy may qualify you for Medicaid depending on the program's requirements. An application is not an approval. Start with Florida DCF's official Medicaid information and its MyACCESS application link. ^[1]

Ask about temporary prenatal coverage

Florida also describes Presumptively Eligible Pregnant Women, or PEPW. Qualified providers assess eligibility for this temporary prenatal coverage; it is not the same as an ongoing Medicaid determination. ^[1]

When calling a prenatal practice, ask whether it can assess PEPW or identify the appropriate qualified provider. Do not assume every clinic does this or that a positive test alone approves coverage.

Keep a short list of coverage questions

You can ask the program or application assister:

• Which application fits my situation?
• What information is required, and what if a document is missing?
• What care and dates would coverage include if I am approved?
• How do I submit an application for ongoing Medicaid during temporary coverage?
• How do I check the decision and get language assistance?

Use the official application process for personal documents. Do not send insurance, identity, immigration or income documents through Care Net's general appointment message. If you already have some coverage, get advice before cancelling or replacing it.

If Medicaid is not the answer

HealthCare.gov allows Medicaid applications year-round, but pregnancy by itself does not open a federal Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. Other circumstances may qualify you. ^[2] Ask about current enrollment options rather than assuming you must wait or can enroll immediately.

HRSA's health-center directory is another place to look for care when uninsured. ^[3] Ask the location about prenatal services, fees and openings. A listing does not guarantee a no-cost visit, insurance enrollment or an available appointment.

Separate testing from ongoing care
