Talking about pregnancy expenses with your partner

Make a clear, voluntary plan for near-term expenses without turning money into pressure, control or promises you cannot keep.

Team review pending

If pregnancy may be part of your future, a money conversation can start with one immediate need. You do not have to predict every future cost or agree on every responsibility in the first discussion.

Start with the actual question

Is the concern transport to a visit, time away from work, an upcoming bill or something you do not yet have a price for? Put the question in plain words before discussing who will contribute.

Avoid using a generic baby-cost figure as if it were your own bill. Ask the relevant office or provider about actual charges and coverage. Write down what remains unknown so a guess does not become a promise.

Be clear about an offer

If one person offers money or help, clarify what is being offered and whether repayment is expected. CFPB guidance recommends discussing financial arrangements and expectations before relying on them. [1]

For example, helping with a ride this week is different from promising ongoing transport. Ask what each person can realistically do, when it would happen and what you should do if circumstances change. A written note can help both of you remember the plan; it is not a substitute for legal advice about obligations.

Keep support separate from control

Financial abuse can involve using access to money to control a partner. [2] Help should not depend on sharing account passwords, surrendering control of spending or making a particular pregnancy decision.

No one should use payment as permission to receive another person's medical results or manage their appointments. Keep each person's care and information boundaries clear. If a conversation feels threatening, seek safety support rather than trying to negotiate under pressure.

Agree on the next step you can actually take

That might be finding out a cost, asking about a current resource, or confirming one practical arrangement. Check in after you have the missing information. You can revise a plan together without pretending uncertainty has disappeared.
