An early ultrasound left you with questions. What should you ask next?

If an early scan did not give a clear answer, ask the treating team for a specific follow-up plan. You should not have to translate a few unfamiliar words into instructions by yourself.

If the pregnancy's location is still uncertain, contact the treating team immediately for new or increasing abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, lightheadedness or increased bleeding. Severe pain, heavy bleeding or fainting needs urgent medical attention. Call 911 for an emergency; do not wait for the next appointment or a website reply. ^{[1], [2]}

What is known, and what is still uncertain?

Ask the clinician to explain the actual report in plain language. A useful opening is: “What did you learn today, and what are we still checking?”

If the team uses “pregnancy of unknown location,” ask what that means for your care. It describes an unresolved location after a positive test and ultrasound, not a confirmed outcome. Follow-up may involve blood tests and another scan. ^[2] The treating team decides which evaluations and timing fit your situation.

Do not substitute an internet photo comparison for that explanation. A screenshot may leave out information the clinician uses.

Leave with an owner and a next action

Write down:

• Which clinician or service is handling the follow-up.
• What you need to do next, where and when.
• Whether the appointment is booked or you must call to arrange it.
• How results will reach you and whom to contact if they do not.
• Which symptoms should change the plan, including outside office hours.

You can ask the team to check your notes: “Have I understood this correctly?” If a language barrier makes the explanation difficult, ask how to arrange language assistance.

If the plan becomes difficult to follow

Tell the clinical team promptly if you cannot attend or cannot reach the service named in the instructions. Ask them how to proceed rather than choosing a different waiting interval yourself.

Keep medical records within the providers' approved sharing process. A general appointment form or social-media message is not a place to request interpretation of scan images.
