Pregnant and trying to stop smoking or vaping? Start with support.

Ask about a pregnancy-specific quit plan, find a free quitline and get help without switching to an assumed safe alternative.

Quitting smoking can help during pregnancy, even if you did not stop before the positive test. [2] Vaping is not a safe pregnancy alternative, and e-cigarettes are not FDA-approved quit-smoking treatments. [1]

You can ask for help before you feel ready to explain everything perfectly.

Make the first conversation specific

Tell your prenatal healthcare professional what you use and how often. Mention both cigarettes and vaping if you use both. You might also note when the urge is strongest, what you have already tried and what made stopping difficult.

Ask:

  • Can we make a quit plan that fits my pregnancy care?
  • Where can I get coaching between appointments?
  • What should I do if I smoke or vape again?
  • Who should I contact with questions about treatment?

Discuss any quit-smoking medicine, patch or gum with your clinician rather than choosing a treatment yourself. [1]

Use a separate quit-support service

1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) connects people with free quit support. CDC also lists 1-855-DÉJELO-YA for Spanish. [1], [2] Ask about pregnancy-specific help and any language assistance you need. Availability of Haitian Creole support is not established here.

These are quitline services, not Care Net phone numbers. The listing does not promise free medicine or a particular treatment for every caller.

Ask for help with the situations around you

If someone you trust wants to help, name one useful action: checking in at a time you choose, joining you for a different activity, or not offering cigarettes. Avoiding secondhand smoke also matters during pregnancy. [2]

If you return to smoking or vaping, tell the person helping with your plan. You can say, “This is where I got stuck. Can we work on that?” The conversation can continue without making a promise you do not know how to keep.

Care Net is a pro-life nonprofit in Vero Beach. You can ask about pregnancy and practical support while arranging clinical help to quit. Care Net does not perform or refer for abortions. An appointment request needs staff confirmation and is not enrollment in a tobacco-treatment program.
